Building Better Days provides building toys to pediatric patients who are admitted 2 or more nights in the hospital, had surgery or have a serious illness and are in and out of the hospital often and also serve their siblings.
Children receive many benefits from having a building toy. Besides improving a child’s hospital stay, they support important educational development. For example, building toys give children a sense of accomplishment and control, which is especially important in the hospital since children lose most of their decision-making power because of treatment protocols. Also, some medications affect motor skills, so building is a way to practice these skills. Building and constructing also support educational tasks such as counting, pattern recognition, following directions, spatial awareness and principles of engineering. Since children are missing school, these benefits can help reinforce math and science concepts.
GOAL $500
Our hope is that it will take their minds off of the treatments and procedures that they are going through and help them connect to their creative selves and share their creations with others, including new friends in the hospital. We need new (in the package) building toys to give to local hospitals. Some examples of building toys are Lego, K'Nex, Mega Bloks, Tinkertoy, Nanoblock, Zoob, Erector, and Goldie Blox & the Builders.
